The Jazz festival Nice was held for the first time in 1948 and took place during the Carnival period at the Casino, the Opera and the Hotel Negresco. The Idiot's Guide to Jazz classified it as "the first jazz festival of international importance". At the first event, Louis Armstrong and his All Stars were the main band. Yves Montand, Stéphane Grappelli, Claude Luter and Django Reinhardt also performed. It was organised by Hugues Panassié and Charles Delaunay.
