Description
The Monte Carlo Rolex Masters is the third annual tennis tournament in the men's tournament calendar of the Masters Series established in 1990 and the first of three Masters tournaments on clay.
The traditional tournament was first held in 1897 and is thus one of the oldest and most traditional tennis tournaments in the world. With the start of the Open Era in 1969, it was also opened to professionals. It has been part of the Masters Series from the beginning and is therefore one of the most prestigious clay court tournaments. In 2007, it was planned to downgrade the tournament - similar to the traditional Masters at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg - as part of a major restructuring of the ATP Tour.
